A TECHNIQUE TO FACILITATE REFLECTION, TEAMBUILDING, COMMUNICATION AND PROBLEM SOLVING WITHIN THE WORKING TEAMS

The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® program is a radical and innovative process designed to enhance business performance through building with LEGO bricks.

LEGO® Serious Play® is an interesting combination of scientific methodology  and playful, creative process.

Johan Roos and Bart Victor created the « Serious Play » concept and process in the mid-1990s as way to enable managers to describe, create and challenge their views on their business. The empirical foundation of the concept of Serious Play stems from Roos and Victor’s experiments with leadership teams in Tetra Pak, Hydro Aluminium and TFL and during an IMD program for the top 300 leaders in the Lego Group. Dr. Roos is now Chief Academic Officer at Hult International Business School and Dr. Bart Victor is Cal Turner Professor of Moral Leadership at Vanderbilt University but when they created Serious Play they were both professors at IMD in Switzerland.

The approach

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® is a well-known category of « Serious Play » facilitation methods. The method is described as « a passionate and practical process for building confidence, commitment and insight ».

The approach is based on research which suggests that hands-on, « minds-on » learning produces a deeper, more meaningful understanding of the world and its possibilities. It is claimed that participants come away with skills: to communicate more effectively, to engage their  imaginations more readily, and to approach their work with increased confidence, commitment and insight

This process will trigger and create individual, team and organizational insights and ideas. Both you and your team can gain insight, understanding and clarification in the context of your organization’s identity, dynamics and functioning. This is to strengthen the processes and to be prepared to take effective decision.

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® is particularly effective and used in companies around the world when :

  • The subject is complex and multifaceted and there is a need to grasp the bigger picture, find connections and explore options and potential solutions
  • It is important to reach decisions which everyone commits to and honors after the meeting
  • Strengthening the working relationship
  • Foster trust and collaboration with the entire organizational structure
  • You want to deal with tough and complex issues in a constructive atmosphere
  • You want to increase team understanding and at the same time avoid frustration
  • You would like to gain new learning, insights and new ways of thinking
  • You want to ensure that all participants share a common understanding and frame of reference

TheLEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® methodology is adapted to any sector of activity, type of company, organization, trades, teams and individuals.
